THE profile of the Ashling Murphy 4 mile road race has received a big boost by being included in a prestigious national series.
It was ran last year in Tullamore for the first time to commemorate murdered school teacher Ashling Murphy. The Blueball woman was killed while out jogging on the Grand Canal greenway near Cappincur last year and her death shocked the country.
800 runners, joggers and walkers took place in last year's inaugural event. This year's event is likely to be even bigger following its inclusion in the Peugeot Race Series.
The Peugeot Race Series got underway on St Patrick's Day with the Streets of Portlaoise 5k. It will be followed by 5ks in Kilkenny and Enfield with the Ashling Murphy 4 mile in Tullamore n Sunday, April 21 at 10am. The series will continue with the Dunshaughlin 10k and 10 mile road races in Roscommon, Edenderry and Cork City.
With valuable prizes on offer for the overall winners, there will be some excellent athletes competing – elite men must have ran under 15 minutes for 5k and the mark is 17 minutes for women, or comparable times over 10k or 10 miles.
A slightly new course will be in operation for the Ashling Murphy 4 miler and the course records will be established from this year.
The Ashling Murphy Perpetual Trophy will be presented to the first female across the line. There are prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd finishers in both ladies and gents as well as category prizes for over 40, 45, 50, 60 and 70.
It also forms part of the Offaly Endurance Road races series which includes the Kilcormac 10m, Edenderry 10 mile and Tullamore half marathon.
Ashling was a talented musician and music will form a a big part of the day's events. Members of Ballyboy Comhaltas will play music along the course and there will be entertainment at the finish in O'Connor Square afterwards.
Her parents, Ray and Kathleen were present at a launch of the race last Friday evening at Tullamore's Bank of Ireland where members of Offaly athletics clubs and the County Board gathered.
