Prestigious Rás Tailteann visiting Offaly for two days

The first stage of the Ras Tailteann will finish at John's Mall Birr on Wednesday May 17th.

THE prestigious Rás Tailteann will be visiting Birr for two days later this month and Birr Gardaí are saying there will be traffic restrictions in place in the town for a period of time.

Rás Tailteann is a five day international cycling race which attracts some of the best cyclists around. It’s been in Birr before, but only passing through and never stopping over.

160 cyclists and their support vehicles will arrive into Birr between 3-4pm on Wednesday afternoon May 17th, finishing at John’s Mall. The cyclists will have completed a gruelling stage over the Slieve Bloom Mountains on the day they come into Birr. They will arrive in the town via the Kinnitty Road and the Syngefield roundabout. The Race HQ for the day will be The County Arms Hotel.

The following morning, Thursday May 18th, there will be a ceremonial start in Emmet Square, at 11am. The cyclists will cruise to Killeen National School at which point the clock will commence and the racing proper get underway.

Rás Tailteann is named after the Tailteann Games, an early medieval Gaelic festival.

A spokesperson in Birr Garda Station there will be a small amount of traffic disruption in place over the two days, but it will be relatively short-lived and he asked for motorists’ patience.
