State of the art extension opened at community centre in Offaly

Minister Heather Humphreys opens the extension at Croghan Community Centre

AN extension to Croghan Community Centre which was funded by a number of Government schemes has been officailly opened.

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys opened the extension recently.

The centre received almost €100,000 under the CLÁR programme.

Minister Humphreys also officially launched the 2018 Town and Village Renewal project which undertook physical works to regularise and improve visitor access to the top of Croghan Hill enhancing the visitor experience and tapping into Ireland's Ancient East tourism brand.

Welcoming Minister Humphreys to Offaly, Cathaoirleach of Edenderry Municipal District, Cllr Robert McDermott noted that “funding such as CLAR, TVR, ORIS from the Department of Rural and Community Development ensures that rural communities continue to benefit from the economic, social and environmental opportunities creating vibrant and attractive locations for people to live, work and visit, while also serving as a social, cultural and recreational hubs for the local community.”

“We would like to officially express our most sincere gratitude to all the Regeneration funding streams from her Department and the transformational change these schemes have brought to rural towns and villages in Offaly under ‘Our Rural Future’ Policy,” added Cllr McDermott.

He said that relations between the Department of Rural and Community Development and Offaly County Council has always been strong.

He concluded: “I would like to commend all Croghan Community groups on their continuous work in making Croghan a more attractive location for themselves and visitors.”

Shirley Reynolds, Croghan Development Association, paid tribute to the effort of the existing and previous committees who have worked diligently to develop the Community Centre.

Cllr Liam Quinn referred to the suite of projects already delivered in Croghan, especially the access walk to Croghan Hill and the future projects planned including the greenway link to Croghan.
