Unsightly verges in Offaly town tackled in council operation

WEEDS

Work by the council on verges in Edenderry has been welcomed by Cllr Noel Cribbin

Ongoing works by Offaly County Council in cutting back overgrown and unsightly grass verges in the Dunne's Stores' area and the new Inner Relief Road in Edenderry have been welcomed by the newly elected Cathaoirleach of Edenderry Municipal District, Fine Gael's Cllr Noel Cribbin.

“The Government in its wisdom have recently introduced a 'No mowing until May' policy and and local authorities around the country are under strict instructions to adhere to these guidelines,” he outlined.

The new MD chief said the new guidelines also included a policy no spraying of Roundup to kill the weeds on paths.

“Whilst these new guidelines are needed  it makes for all grass verges to grow completely out of hand as the new growth kicks in from February on and this year because of the Roundup ban we (all four of us) in Edenderry Tidy Towns had to scuffle the weeds in the town with hoes and spades . . . as a result  the town looks well and again I welcome the assistance by our local MD in addressing these issues.”

Cllr Cribbin also revealed he has looked for a time scheduling of major road upgrades in Edenderry such as the resurfacing of Main Street,  Francis Street and the raising of the new pedestrian crossing on Francis Street.

“These are works I looked for and are included in this year's Roads Programme and I'm glad that all works will be carried out during school holidays and are awaiting confirmation from  the contractor's  for start dates,” stated Cllr Cribbin.
