Fr Nick Clavin, fifth from left on the back row and the Offaly 1971 All-Ireland SFC champions
LEGENDARY Offaly footballer, Fr Nick Clavin is celebrating the golden jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood this Sunday.
One of the stars of the Offaly team that won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 1971 and 1972, Fr Nick won an All-Star in 1971.
While his county career was comparatively short, he was one of the greats of the game in Offaly, a brilliantly effective centre half back.
He won Leinster senior football medals in 1969, '71, '72 and '73 and played in the 1969 All-Ireland final defeat by Kerry.
The 1973 All-Ireland semi-final defeat by Galway proved to be the last of his 45 appearances as he departed for San Diego soon after that and he has remained there ever since – he was ordained in '73.
From the Derries in Rahan, a member of a renowned local family, he won U-21 and Junior football medals with St Carthage's in the late 1960s and was the star member of the side that lost to Tullamore in the 1973 Senior Football Championship final.
An annual visitor home, Fr Nick's celebration will take place in St Carthage's Church, Killina on Sunday, July 23 at 2pm with a reception later on in Tullamore.
The celebration will be attended by several GAA stalwarts from club and county as well as many locals and family members.
