IN January 2022 Runners and Riders was formed by John Bennett and Paddy Daly as an extra activity part of the original Lough Boora Running Group to facilitate cycling along with the running.
They decided to organise a fundraising 200 km cycle to Kilkenny and back in May 2022 which was a very successful event, and a 50 km run which on that occasion raised €34,000, for Cycle Against Suicide Banagher College, and St Rynagh’s Cloghan Football Club. This event proved so successful they decided to do something again this year.
The lads were approached by Michael Mulvey to do something for St Mary’s National School, Cloghan, and by Johnny Butler, Banagher, to do something for Banagher Shannon Bank Park Development. With the aid of Gemma Mulvey and Ava Daly, Johnny Butler, John Bennett and Paddy Daly, they got together and put a plan in place.
Galway was their chosen destination for this year’s event, cycling 200 km, and a 600km Mizen to Malin cycle, and a 10km run from Banagher to Cloghan which was organised by Rosin and Ger Woods.
The training for the cyclists was managed by Ian Mahon, his team was Conor Camon, Michael Mulvey, Paul Daly, Johnny and Grace Butler, Joey Carroll, Conor Dolan and Paddy Daly.On the cycle to Galway they had a support team of David Talbot, Celia Bennett, J.J. Daly.
They also did a cycle from Mizen to Malin during the month. The support crew for this event was Ronnie Byrne and Sean Corrigan, and they were joined by the Duggan Brothers.
The Run was organised by John Bennett, Rosin and Ger Woods and supported on the day by Alice Camon, Eva Camon and Mary Guinan.
In total this year’s event raised €45,000 for the two local beneficiaries. Also, other cyclists on this event raised money for their organisations, and Duggan Brothers builders had a team cycling with the group. The total raised by all cyclists for this year event was in the region of €62,000 and in total for the eighteen months the amount was €97,000. Well done to everyone for your support in whichever way you provided it.
