Elderly man and woman assaulted and cash stolen during callous aggravated burglary in the Midlands

Gardaí are investigating an aggravated burglary that occurred on Friday evening, September 8, at a domestic residence in Athlone, Co Westmeath.

Shortly after 6pm, two individuals entered the property on Cartron Drive.

A male in his 80s and a female in her 70s were assaulted and a sum of cash was taken during the course of this incident.

The man received medical treatment at the scene from paramedics for his injuries.

A technical examination of the scene has been conducted by Gardaí and investigations are currently ongoing.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with any information regarding this incident to come forward.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Retreat Road or Cartron Drive estate area of Athlone between 5pm and 6.30pm on September 8, and believes they may have seen something out of the ordinary.

Any road users who may have video camera footage (including dash-cam) from this area at this time, are asked to make it available to Gardaí.
