An Offaly GAA club has led tributes after the untimely passing of one their former players and selectors.

Bracknagh GAA released a heartfelt statement on Tuesday morning to mark the passing of Paul 'Boshy' Dempsey.

"A dark cloud has formed over our club this morning with the sad news of the untimely passing of Paul 'Boshy' Dempsey," they said.

"Paul was a selector with the junior team over the last few years and prior to that was a key player on our adult team and was a member of the 2000 winning championship team.

"On behalf of the club we pass on our deepest sympathy to his wife Elaine, Daughter Nadine, The Dempsey family and Pauls wide circle of friends. Ar Dheis Raibh Go Anam," the club added.

Underage club in the area, St Broughans GAA, added: "Devastating news this morning to hear of the passing of Paul Dempsey, formerly Ballyshane, Bracknagh.

"The thoughts & prayers of all of us are with the Dempsey’s, life is truly so precious. There are no words at a time like this, hug your loved ones and take care."

Locals also joined in tributes with one saying: "Very sad news this morning. Rip Boshy. Deepest condolences to Elaine, Nadine the Grattan and Dempsey families."
