Work is mooted for the cross roads at Doon
The Gardai in Offaly are in ongoing engagement with Offaly County Council’s area engineer John Mitchell in relation to improving safety measures at Doon crossroads, Independent TD Carol Nolan has confirmed.
Deputy Nolan said she has been making representations on the matter following the death in March of a woman in her 70s who died after her car collided with a lorry on the N62 at Doon Cross, outside Ferbane.
The Independent TD said that locals have been alarmed by the tragedy and had sought assurances from her that additional safety measures would be explored:
“Following the most recent tragic death at Doon I engaged with Birr Garda Station and with Superintendent Alan Kerin, who has said he concurs with my concerns in relation to Doon crossroads,” said Deputy Nolan.
“Superintendent Kerin was present in the area on the morning of the recent fatal traffic accident and I know that he is fully aware of the dangers that exist.”
“I have been informed by the Superintendent that his team are engaging with area engineer John Mitchell in relation to speed limit and safety signs in the area as some signs need to be replaced, while sight lines to others need to be cleared.”
“I also understand however that following recent road improvements in the area, there are some issues in terms of safety for Gardai performing speed checks at Doon cross, but that these and other matters are going to be explored further.”
“I want to thank Birr Gardai and indeed Offaly Council and the wider community for their work in trying to improve the safety for all drivers on the N62, particularly around Doon crossroads,” concluded Deputy Nolan.
