The late Deputy Ber Cowen, at front, with some of the personnel behind 'Irish Mist'
A HISTORY of the famous “Irish Mist” - “Irish Mist: the story of Tullamore’s whiskey liqueur, 1945-1985” - will be launched in Offaly History Centre, Bury Quay, Tullamore on Friday next, December 1 at 8pm.
The launch is being performed by the Irish Secretary of the National Union of Journalists and former Tullamore Tribune journalist, Seamus Dooley, a native of Ferbane.
This volume, which is in full colour with 275 pages with some fine illustrations, is edited by Michael Byrne and John Flanagan. Other contributors include Guy Williams, Brian Jaffray, Ger Scully, Mike Murphy, Gerry Molyneaux, Anne Williams, Camillus Dwane, Frank Nicholson and Peter Hallgarten.
“It is a book that will interest not only those looking back to a product developed and marketed from Tullamore, but also to budding entrepreneurs interested to see how it was done so successfully,” said Michael Byrne.
He added; “Ireland is now selling 25 million cases of spirits and it all started modestly in the 1950s after a gap of thirty to fifty years. Irish Mist and Tullamore Dew were out there as pioneers in the 1950s. The beauty of the blend is evoked today as it was for the fledgling U.S. market in the 1950s.”
The book has been supported by Creative Ireland and Offaly County Council.
