An ambulance crew attempted to detain a suspected drunk driver who gardaí say narrowly missed an ambulance before crashing into a lamppost.

The incident happened in the Midlands at the weekend.

“Our Roads Policing Unit in Delvin Co. Westmeath were called to a collision on Saturday night involving this van,” Westmeath gardaí said on social media.

“It had come up off the motorway and hit a lamppost, narrowly missing an ambulance which was enroute to hospital with a patient.

The ambulance crew were forced to try detain the van's driver as he tried to flee the scene.

When we arrived, he was arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence,” they stated.
