Historic building on large site in Offaly is now on the market
A historic building on a large site in Offaly is now on the market for an undisclosed price.
The former Parsonstown Union Workhouse in Birr is located on a 4.5 acre site in a prime location in the town.
The property is located in an area zoned 'Existing Residential' under the Birr Local Area Plan 2023 - 2029.
Described as one of the most important heritage buildings in Offaly, it was gutted by fire in 2017 and has remained in poor condition since then and has been described as gradually deteriorating year on year.
In September 2018 a Birr 20:20 meeting was told that the building had been purchased by Castle Rook, a Canadian/Chinese company with its Irish base in Louth, and restoration was about to get underway, focusing initially on the roof, which is riddled with holes.
Detailed plans were shown during the September 2018 meeting. Castle Rook said it was proposing to transform the Workhouse into 'a centre providing care for those with dementia'.
