Delighted Offaly girl wins first Ireland soccer caps after late call up

Emma Mooney

A Tullamore girl won her first Ireland soccer caps last week. Emma Mooney made her debut for Ireland U-16s in a 3-1 defeat by Portugal. She also came on in a 2-1 win over Austria on May 16 and 18 and then won a starting place for the final game against France on Tuesday, a great 1-0 win.

It was a dream week for Emma as she hadn't originally been in the squad but got a late call up because of an injury last Tuesday morning week, told to quickly get to Dublin for departure. She has been training with the squad in recent months and grasped her opportunity with both hands.

Emma is a very talented all round sportswoman. She has competed at a a high level in swimming and is also a very good ladies footballer but is making real progress in soccer.

A student at Tullamore College, she started playing with Killeigh Schoolboys and Girls Soccer Club and is now with Athlone Town.

She was called into the Ireland U-16 squad last year and her hard work with them has now paid off. She came on in the 62nd minute in the loss to Portugal and in the 63rd minute in the win over Austria in the UEFA Development Tournament in the Estadio Carla Sacramento in Portugal.

Emma is the daughter of Leonard Mooney and Verona Smyth.
