EXCITEMENT filled the air as the 6th class students of Crinkill National School eagerly awaited their much-anticipated trip to Croke Park.

The reason behind this buzz of anticipation? Crinkill NS had clinched the coveted first prize in the Cornmarket Cumann na mBunscol School of the Year Award, earning them a memorable visit to the iconic stadium, coupled with a meal to celebrate their achievement.

Early on the morning of Tuesday May 28th, the students, accompanied by their teachers set off on a journey that promised not only fun and adventure but also a chance to soak in the rich history and culture of Ireland’s most beloved sports – The Gaelic Games.

As the school bus made its way towards Dublin, the excitement among the students was palpable. For many of them, this would be their first visit to the legendary Croke Park, a venue steeped in tradition and sporting glory. For Crinkill NS, it was a momentous occasion, marking their outstanding achievement in promoting Gaelic Games and fostering a spirit of sportsmanship and Irish culture within their school community.

Upon arrival at Croke Park, the students were greeted by the Cumann na mBunscol National Committee Chairperson Joe Lyons, Secretary Gary Farrell and Vice-Chairperson Fidelma Sheridan and the Croke Park staff, who ushered them into the heart of the stadium. They had a few minutes to stretch their legs and have a puck around at the Michael Cusack Statue before the tour began. The guided tour offered a glimpse into the hallowed grounds where legends were made, and history was written. From the players' dressing rooms to the VIP lounge, every corner of Croke Park echoed with tales of triumph and glory, inspiring awe and admiration among the young visitors.

While in the Croke Park Press Room, Chairperson Joe Lyons congratulated the students, teachers and broader school community on their “amazing” achievement on coming first out of over 4,000 primary schools in the whole of Ireland. Secretary Gary Farrell also congratulated Crinkill NS and complimented the “excellent work” that goes on in the school in promoting the Irish heritage and culture through the school’s involvement in Cumann na mBunscol games and school activities.

But the highlight of the day was yet to come – a lovely meal awaited the students at one of Croke Park’s finest dining establishments. Gathered around tables adorned with crisp linens, the students shared dreams, stories and laughter, basking in the warmth of camaraderie and friendship that defined their school community.

Principal Sandra Nolan said the trip was a moment of immense pride and joy. “Winning the Cornmarket Cumann na mBunscol School of the Year Award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, parents and community,” she remarked. “On this visit to Croke Park, we celebrated not just our victory, but also the spirit of teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship that defines Crinkill National School.”

As the day drew to a close and the students bid farewell to Croke Park, they left with memories that would last a lifetime. For Crinkill NS, the journey to Croke Park was not just a reward for their achievements but a symbol of the values and traditions that they hold dear – a reminder that with determination and perseverance, anything is possible.

As the school bus made its way back to Crinkill, echoes of laughter and excitement filled the air, a testament to the unforgettable experience that had brought them closer together as a school community. And as they returned home, hearts full and spirits high, one thing was certain – the journey to Croke Park was just the beginning of many more victories yet to come for Crinkill National School.
