Ollie Bryant being hoisted aloft following his election on Sunday
“I was getting more confident as the campaign went on . . . I didn't know what to expect at the start.” The words of new Fianna Fail councillor in the Tullamore Electoral Area, Ollie Bryant, as he digested his election the previous evening at the count centre in Mucklagh.
Speaking to the Tribune from outside the same centre as the count in the Birr area progressed, Cllr Bryant said he became more engaged with the electorate as the campaign progressed.
The Cloonagh man, who has promised to be a voice for rural communities at the council table, said voters were very impressed he made the effort to call to them in their homes on his canvass, especially in rural areas.
“I knocked on over 2,500 doors and went back a second time,” outlined the new Fianna Fail councillor, whose election ensures the party retains its overall majority on Tullamore Municipal District Council.
He commenced his campaign on Holy Thursday and was on the election trail right up to polling day.
In a statement Cllr Bryant outlined: I'm honored to have been elected as a Councillor to Offaly County Council. This achievement would not have been possible without the incredible support and votes from the people of Tullamore Municipal District. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to my campaign team, who worked tirelessly to make this possible. Your efforts in distributing leaflets, putting up posters, canvassing at doors, driving, and managing our social media were nothing short of extraordinary. Your dedication and hard work are deeply appreciated, and I am grateful for your unwavering support.”
Cllr Bryant said retiring public representative Danny Owens had been a massive addition to his campaign.
“He introduced me to people and told me where to go,” said the new councillor who added that Danny Owens endorsement of his candidacy had been a major factor in his electoral success.
“He told people that he had looked after issues for them in the past and that I was the man to go to in the future,” outlined Cllr Bryant.
He added: “Danny nominated me to stand for election and campaigned tirelessly every evening, offering invaluable advice and guidance. Danny has served the people of this community with distinction for 20 years, and I am committed to continuing his legacy of dedicated service.”
Cllr Bryant said he will prioritise rural issues and highlighted the need for public lighting from the Fingerboard to Mucklagh where many people walk in the evening.
