A talented Tullamore sportsman will be remembered at a soccer tournament on Saturday, August 10.

Arden Celtic and St Michael's will compete for the Patrick Gorman Memorial Cup in the tournament at Coolraine Football Club, Durrow at 4pm on Saturday.

The tournament is being hosted by Coolraine FC and commemorates the memory of a very popular local man, Patrick Gorman, whose passing after a battle with illness in February 2024 devastated his family and many friends.

From Arden View in Tullamore, the late Patrick Gorman was a good soccer and football player. Known fondly as Pa, he played underage football with Tullamore GAA Club, winning U-16 and Minor Football Championship medals in 1997 and 1999, as well as representing Offaly. He combined football with soccer in his underage years, winning several medals with Tullamore Town.

At adult level, he concentrated on soccer, lining out for the Tullamore firsts team for years. He played under managers John Minnock, Tony Albion and Pappy Ruane and won medals, including a memorable treble of league and cups in 2004-2005. He played at midfield or centre back and lined out in an FAI Cup defeat by Athlone Town in St Mel's Park.

A character, he saw out his career with Coolraine, winning over 35s medals with them and finishing up shortly before he got ill. He also loved attending martial arts tournaments in Ireland and abroad as a young child and teenager with his father, Patsy, a well known local coach. A block-layer, his removal and funeral was a very emotional occasion with hundreds of mourners attending.

Saturday's event will be a celebration of his life with a benefit night taking place in the Lantern Bar in Tullamore from 7.30pm with all proceeds going to Dochas, Tullamore and the Friends of the Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore.

There will be live music in the Lantern and food will be served while there will be a raffle on the night with loads of spot prizes.

The entry fee of €10 covers both the match and the benefit night and the organisers hope to see a large crowd at both venues.
