Tommy Greene, right, with fellow Offaly football heroes Johnny Mooney and Peter Nolan
A specially compiled video on Offaly and Daingean GAA’s iconic player, Tommy Greene, will be launched in Maunsell’s pub, Tullamore on Thursday December 12th next.
Admission is free but donations and all proceeds go to Offaly Hospice at Tommy’s request.
The video, ‘Tommy Gree: The Dynamo from Daingean - a playing career 1953 - 2000,’ features personal recollections by Tommy, from his earliest time as a player for Daingean in the early 1950s to his final game for the club, aged 64, in 2000.
He talks about his role in the Offaly teams of 1960 and 1961, including the epic final against Down in ‘61 attended by over 90,000 people.
He deals with the infamous ‘penalty that wasn’t’ in that match, when two Down defenders tackled Tommy to the ground as he was about to shoot for goal.
Tommy had earlier scored two goals for Offaly in the semi-final against Roscommon.
The video also features some of his peers from that time, including Paddy McCormack, Phil O’Reilly and Charlie Wrenn from the Offaly panel and Joe Hanlon, a member of the Daingean team that won its ‘first’ County title in 1962. Current Daingean chairman, David Walsh, also has his say.
Comment and analysis on his legacy is provided by Offaly GAA Chairperson, Michael Duignan and Sports Editor of the Tullamore and Midland Tribune, Kevin Corrigan.
Proceedings kick off in Maunsells from 7pm. There will be two showings of the video on the night to accommodate those late through the turnstiles. All welcome.
