The ruins of the old church were cleared by locals in the mid 1980s
A horrific Christmas Day massacre in Offaly is to be remembered at a special Mass this Christmas
CHRISTMAS Day Mass will be celebrated at 11am on Christmas morning in the church ruins at the old Killoughey graveyard outside of Mountbolus.
This Mass is in remembrance of those who died in the church on Christmas morning in 1651.
As the local parishioners attended morning Mass on that fateful day, Cromwellian soldiers surrounded the church, set it alight and burned it to the ground with the congregation inside.
It will be the first time in over 370 years that Christmas morning Mass will be celebrated in the church ruins.
