Boxing award gives Offaly professional boost ahead of big 2025

Paul Loonam

AN ambitious young Pullough boxer has received a boost ahead of the coming season. Pullough's Paul Loonam was selected as the Eamon Magee Jnr professional Prospect of the Year in a vote on Irish-Boxing.com.

Loonam turned professional after missing out on qualification for the Paris Olympics and has made a very solid start in the paid ranks.

The bantamweight had four impressive wins in 2024 and won the award with 45% of the vote, ahead of Joe Ward (19%) and Steven Cairns (18%).

Loonam took up the sport at St Carthage's Boxing Club in Rahan and made consistent progress in amateur ranks under the guidance of his father and coach, also Paul Loonam, winning national titles.

The 23 year old thanked his team for their “consistent hard work” in 2024 and promised that 2025 “will be a big one”.

48 nominees were put forward for ten categories in the awards.
