Man convicted of stealing bank card on bus in Offaly

An Offaly man was convicted of stealing a bank card on a bus and illegally using it, during last week's sitting of Tullamore Court.

Trevor Jennings, no fixed abode, Birr, who is 39 years of age, pleaded guilty to the offences, which took place on January 12, 2025.

He was charged with, at an unknown location on the Limerick to Birr Bus Eireann bus, stealing another passenger's wallet which contained €10 cash and various bank cards.

Later on that day, at Applegreen, Railway Road, Birr, he “dishonestly by deception induced the cashier to do an act to wit issue €40 of scratch cards using a stolen bank card,” and at Mulrooney's Gala, Railway Road, Birr, “dishonestly by deception induce the cashier to do an act to wit issue €40 of scratch cards using a stolen debit card.”

Sergeant Brendan Kearns told the court that the injured party on the bus was a man asleep. The Sergeant said Mr Jennings had 97 previous convictions, including 48 previous for theft.

“He is presently in custody serving a six months sentence for theft.”

The defending solicitor Aisling Maloney pointed out that her client had been addicted to drugs since the age of 18.

“A number of members of his family suffer from addiction problems. He has two children. He has put his name down for courses in prison, including addiction counselling and educational courses.”

Judge Andrew Cody convicted to a month's imprisonment, to run following the expiry of his current prison sentence.
