There is concern over a potential tragedy in Edenderry after a youngster was spotted engaging in a dangerous act on the main street in an Offaly town.

The incident was reported to have happened on JKL Street in Edenderry on Thursday evening when a boy was spotted driving a 50cc motorbike on the road while wearing dark clothing.

A concerned local who spotted the boy, estimated to be around 11 or 12 years of age, posted about the incident on the Edenderry Residents Facebook page to alert others and appeal to parents to make their kids more safety conscious.

The post read: "This evening I was driving through town on JKL Street when an 11-12 year old boy drove past in a tiny zipper 50cc motorbike wearing all black and had no lights on the motorbike.

"Can whoever's parents are responsible for this child please make them more safety aware of the dangers of driving on the road in the dark wearing dark clothes and no lights on the bike.

"And the fact they shouldn't be driving one of them on the road in the first place!!"

Other residents who had spotted the incident reacted to the posted with one man saying the boy "is going to be killed."

A second added that they saw a bike "absolutely flying it up the town straight through at the Dunnes roundabout," adding that the driver "didn't even slow down to look was there anything coming from his right, he easily could have been knocked down."

A third said: "We saw it. Absolutely unbelievable, so dangerous for them and for drivers; it’s not funny."
