Warm tributes have been paid to Sr Immaculata Phelan, who is fondly remembered by generations in both Offaly and Meath, following her death last week.
Known affectionately as Sr Mac, Sr Immaculata died peacefully at the Convent of Mercy in Tullamore on Thursday, April 3.
Formerly based in the Convent of Mercy, Trim and later Convent of Mercy, Tullamore, the much-loved nun and teacher was laid to rest on Saturday following her Funeral Mass at St Patrick's Church, Trim.
Sr Immaculata is predeceased by her parents Peter and Teresa, brothers Peter and Pat (Br Lucian, Patrician Brothers), and sister-in-law Marie. She is deeply mourned by her brother Tom, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, the Sisters of Mercy community, and a wide circle of friends and former pupils.
Among the many tributes shared was one describing her as "a legend… strong and powerful," adding: "A great storyteller, a wonderful teacher. She stepped up for those who were in need. Formidable and forthright. Dearest Sr Mac, my hero."
Another mourner shared: "She was a wonderful teacher who made learning engaging and interesting. A witty and cheerful personality who will be sadly missed by all. Rest in peace Sr. Immaculata and thank you."
"She was always a pleasure to meet and stop for a long chat," another added. "May her gentle soul rest in peace."
"She was such a lovely, jolly and funny person," said a fourth. "I had the privilege of meeting her often and will greatly miss her humour and wit, we always had such a laugh whenever we met."
Sr Immaculata's Funeral Mass took place on Saturday morning, April 5, in St Patrick's Church, Trim, and she was laid to rest afterwards in St Loman's Cemetery. May she rest in peace.
