Offaly County Council paid out €2m in grants for refurbishment of vacant properties

Offaly County Council has paid out two million euro in grants to refurbish vacant properties in the county.

A key measure under the Pathway 4 of Housing for All includes the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant. The aim of the scheme is to make a significant contribution to incentivising the purchase and refurbishment of vacant and derelict dwellings bringing them back into use as homes and reducing vacancy. It is also aimed at supporting town regeneration and environmental objectives.

Offaly County Council received 210 applications, they have approved 153 and rejected 3 applications. The local authority has paid 37 grants to the value of €2.01M.

The grant is paid following completion of approved works. Applicants since May 2023 have 13 months from approval date to finish the works (prior to May 2023 applicants had 18 months to complete works)

As the grant was launched in July 2022 the first grant payments began to issue from the second quarter of 2023 as applicants began to complete refurbishment works.

Individuals who own or are in the process of purchasing a vacant property can avail of a grant of up to €50,000 for vacant properties, with a maximum grant of €70,000 for derelict properties.

The property must be vacant for a period of 2 years or more at the time of application and must be built before 2008. Proof of ownership is required to support the grant application.

Welcoming the numbers of homes returned from vacancy, Minister for Housing James Browne TD, said:

''The momentum of this grant continues to build, with another significant increase in grants being paid on completion of works as more vacant and derelict properties are brought back into use as homes for people across County Offaly.

''The grant is making a significant and important contribution to cities, towns, villages and rural areas, supporting people to bring these vacant and derelict properties back into use as homes and in tandem with that - helping to revitalise communities.''
