Lowry pipped at the post in Truist Championship

Shane Lowry

SHANE Lowry was pipped at the post at the Truist Championship at the Philadelphia Cricket Club on Sunday evening. The Clara professional had to settle for joint second with American Justin Thomas on -14, two shots behind the winner Sepp Straka.

Lowry was agonisingly close to another win on the US PGA Tour, playing some super golf as he continued his great run of form but victory slipped from his grasp late on.

Lowry and Straka were neck and neck as they teed off on the 16th, tied on -16 and victory was within touching distance for the Offaly man.

Unfortunately he had a bogey four on the 16th, missing a short putt and the Austrian was a shot ahead. Both golfers had pars on the difficult 17th and Lowry had a chance on 18 when Straka found a fairway bunker and he got a break when his drive went left but found a perfect lie.

Straka hit a sensational four iron to the body of the green from 211 yards and Lowry was about twenty feet from the pin with a great approach shot. Straka went a couple of feet past with his putt, leaving Lowry needing a birdie to force a play off but he went a few feet past and then missed the putt coming back for a bogey five. That meant that a bogey was enough for Straka but he sank the putt for the par and the win.

Lowry will be disappointed at not closing it out and some of the mistakes that cost him a dear price but his game is in great shape for the big majors and events coming up.
