Woman pleads guilty to stealing wallet

A woman pleaded guilty at last week's district court to stealing a wallet at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore.

On January 1, 2024 a man reported to Tullamore Garda Station that his wallet had been taken. He had left it behind on a bench at the hospital. The wallet contained €500 and a number of cards. When he returned it was gone.

CCTV showed the defendant Rebecca Hehir (48) Grove Street, Crinkle Birr, taking the wallet. Ms Hehir had five previous convictions.

Solicitor Aisling Maloney said Rebecca Hehir who appeared in court in a wheelchair was on a disability payment of €189 per week. She would like to pay back the money, she said.

''So would the injured party,'' said Judge Cody. ''When will it be paid? '' he asked.

Ms Maloney said her client was in difficult circumstances and it would take four to five months.She said she would lay aside €50 per week.

Ms Hehir was granted court bail to September 10, 2025 to pay €500 to the injured party.
