A man who failed to notify the Department of Social Welfare that he was in employment and no longer entitled to social welfare payments appeared at this week's Tullamore District Court.
State Solicitor, Sandra Mahon, said Adam Mooney, with an address at Earlsfort Avenue, Lucan, Dublin had received an overpayment from the Department of €5,815.50 while he was in full time employment.
Ms Mahon said he had not engaged with the Department and as a result €50 was being deducted weekly from his account. €876.80 had been recovered to date.
Solicitor Aisling Maloney said her client had broken his arm two weeks ago and would be out of work for six weeks. She said he would be happy to resume the payments after that. She said he had been earning €750 per week.
Judge Andrew Cody adjourned the case to September 12 and told Ms Maloney that her client would have to engage with the department.
Ms Maloney applied for legal aid, however, Judge Cody said it would be subject to bank statements from Mr Mooney.
