Offaly TD holds meeting with Ambassador of Canada to Ireland

TD for Offaly, John Clendennen held a constructive meeting with His Excellency Dennis King, Ambassador of Canada to Ireland last week

The meeting took place at the Embassy of Canada to Ireland in Dublin, and was also attended by Adeline Grenier, Senior Trade Commissioner at the Embassy.

Key topics discussed included the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) at a time of uncertainty surrounding US trade tariffs and the potential opportunities for enhanced bilateral trade, as well as the importance of the Irish Canadian diaspora in fostering deeper cultural and economic links. The discussion also explored collaborative potential in renewable energy and the green transition, sectors of strategic importance to both Canada and Ireland.

Deputy Clendennen noted the mutual enthusiasm for expanding commercial and civic ties, emphasising the potential of Offaly and the Midlands region. “Canada and Ireland share a deep bond rooted in shared values, a vibrant diaspora, and strong economic partnerships,” he said. “I was especially encouraged by our discussion around renewable energy and broader trade opportunities and how Offaly, with its transitions, could play a role in future co-operation.”

The meeting concluded with a positive discussion around a potential visit by Ambassador King to County Offaly later this year. Such a visit would provide an opportunity to highlight local innovation, heritage, and investment potential within the region.

Deputy Clendennen concluded by expressing his appreciation to Ambassador King and Ms Grenier for their active engagement and dedication to deepening the relationship between Canada and Ireland.
