Excellent second place finish for Alex Dunne at F2 Feature Race at Silverstone
Offaly driver Alex Dunne drove an excellent race in very wet conditions to register a second place finish in the F2 Feature Race at Silverstone on Sunday.
The result sees him finish the weekend in third place in the F2 Championship after he was knocked out of the Sprint Race on Saturday after being hit by Gariele Mini.
Starting second on the grid on Sunday, Alex Dunne maintained that second place into the first corer behind American Jack Crawford who made a rapid start from third on the grid to take the lead.
The duo pulled away from the field with Alex Dunne hanging back slightly to stay out of the spray. On a still wet track with the mandatory F2 pit stops approaching, he closed right up on Crawford, putting the American under pressure.
Crawford dived into the pits just as a Virtual Safety Car came into effect with Dunne diving in a couple of laps later under a full safety car.
That didn't change the order and when the race restarted with two laps to go, there was another spin down the field bringing out another Safety Car and denying Alex Dunne a chance to go for the win.
After an eventful weekend, Richard Verschoor continues to lead the F2 Championship but his lead at the top has been reduced.
Jack Crawford sits in second just six points behind Verschoor with Alex Dunne another eight points behind.
The F2 Championship moves on to Belguim and the legendary Spa Circuit for the next round on the weekend of July 26 and 27.
