Permission denied for 'sub-standard' glamping project in Offaly
Offaly County Council has denied planning permission for what it describes as a 'substandard' glamping project in the county.
Permission had been sought for five one-bed glamping pods, and two two-bed glamping pods at a site in Shannon Harbour.
The local authority refused permission citing a number of issues with the plans.
In refusing permission, Offaly County Council stated that as the applicant had not sufficiently demonstrated the provision of suitable sightlines at the entrance to the subject site, a suitable internal car parking arrangement or the ability of associated vehicles to exit the subject site, the proposed development would 'endanger public safety by reason of traffic hazard' and would therefore be contrary to the proper planning and development of the area.

Offaly County Council also stated that due to the lack of provision of suitable landscaping and boundary treatments, the lack of suitable waste storage and collection and the inappropriate design of the proposed pod structures, it considered that the development was substandard and contrary to development management standard of the Offaly County Development Plan
2021-2027, DMS-83 ‘Caravan, Motorhomes, Glamping and Camping Developments’ which requires a high standard of integrated design and layout linking pitches to well-located communal areas and on site facilities and amenities.
Offaly County Council said that if granted planning permission, the development would set an 'undesirable precedent' for other such developments in the area.
