The case was heard at last week's sitting of Tullamore District Court

A VERY intoxicated man with slurred speech was arrested for his own safety, last week's Tullamore Court was told.

Brendan Daly (59 years of age), 63 Arden View, Tullamore was charged with being intoxicated in public to such an extent that he might be a danger to himself, on July 10 last on Patrick Street, Tullamore. The defendant pleaded guilty.

Sgt Richard Thornton pointed out that when the Guards came across Mr Daly on the day of the offence “his speech was slurred and he had to be arrested for his own safety.” He had 75 previous convictions, including a number of public order convictions.

The defending solicitor told the court that his client is suffering from a drink problem. “On this occasion he had drunk far too much and he felt he had to sit down. He apologises to the Gardaí for taking up their time. He recognises that he needs assistance to deal with his alcohol problem.”

Judge Andrew Cody convicted and fined €300.
