BREAKING: Alex Dunne handed penalty after race and loses victory in Belguim

An after race penalty means that Alex Dunne has been demoted from his race win at the F2 Feature Race in Belguim.

The Offaly driver produced a dominant drive to cross the line in first place behind the Safety Car but a technical breach of the rules means he has lost that win. It is the second time this year he has been disqualified post race for a technical breach having lost a second place in Austria.

According to a release on the F2 website, following the conclusion of Sunday’s Spa-Francorchamps Feature Race, Rodin Motorsport’s Alexander Dunne was penalised.

After the race, Car 17 was referred to the Stewards by the Technical Delegate for an alleged breach of Article 1.6.1 FIA Formula 2 Technical Regulations, after failing to engage the start-up procedure.

A defined set-up procedure activation must be used during all formation starts and race starts and Car 17’s data shows that the driver did not engage the starting procedure.

The Stewards then spoke to a team representative and the driver and having considered the matter extensively elected to give Dunne a 10-second time penalty in accordance with the FIA F2 penalty guideline. This means he loses the Spa Francorchamps Feature Race victory.

The win put him back in the lead of the Championship but the ten second penalty now means he sits in fourth, ten points of new Championship leader Leonardo Fornaroli
