Cappincur finish strong to beat Tubber

Cappincur finish strong to beat Tubber

Brion Carroll, Cappincur

It wasn’t the best of games and certainly won’t be one remembered in the long run, but a win is a win for Cappincur and one they needed following the draw on the opening weekend.

Tullamore Court Hotel Senior B Football Championship Round 2

Cappincur 1-10

Tubber 0-10

Tubber will be disappointed not to have seen the game out as they were in a commanding position but they will know that they have as good a chance as anyone in trying to win this year's championship and that there will be better games from them.

Tubber were the better side in the opening 10 minutes as they led by three and were playing some good attacking football. Bernard Allen kicked two points following Conor Fox’s second minute score.

Cappincur had to wait until the 12th minute to register their first score through a Ger Treacy free, and while he added a second one just a few minutes later, they weren’t taking their chances from play as they kicked five wides in the first quarter and weren’t pressuring the scoreboard.

Ger Treacy’s free following a breach of players back by Tubber levelled the game after 21 minutes, before Bernard Allen kicked a great score to restore his sides lead and making that their third point from play.

Sean Courtney got his side's first score from play with a left footed kick after 24 minutes and drew the sides level for a second time, before his side took the lead for the first time as substitute Andrew Strong’s effort made it 0-5 to 0-4, without the game truly sparking into life just yet.

Bernard Allen and Ger Treacy exchanged frees after good work in the build ups by Donal Shirley and Sean Flynn respectively to give the home side a slender advantage at the break by 0-6 to 0-5.

The second half started and a sloppy kick out from David Graham was intercepted by Bernard Allen and he fed the ball into Conor Fox and he found himself being pulled and dragged which resulted in a 36th minute penalty which was blasted over by Lee Colgan, reducing the gap to just a point.

Bernard Allen was showing his skill and experience as he shifted the lead back to Tubber with back to back points including their first from play in the second half to leave them 0-8 to 0-7 in front with just under 20 minutes left to play.

In the next 10 minutes there was very little to report in terms of scores, with just three points coming between the two sides with Tubber still maintaining a two point lead, until a shot from Eoin Carroll from just inside the around the arc floated in and caught out James Langan and the Tubber defence and found its way into the top left corner before he then kicked the games only two pointer and suddenly the hosts having been down by a point now led by three with four left on the clock.

They managed to see the game out and secure a big victory to add to the draw from the opening game and they’ll hope to push on from here with ambitions of winning this year's championship.

MATCH ANALYSIS

MAN OF THE MATCH

Bernard Allen (Tubber): He may have been on the losing side but Bernard Allen was the best player on the pitch as the former Offaly star kicked 0-7 out of his side’s 0-10 and was a real threat whenever he got the ball. Donal Shirley was also good in the middle and his substitution due to injury definitely affected his side in the last 10 minutes.

Brion and Diarmuid Carroll had good games at full and centre back, while Eoin Carroll finished the game strong with a goal and a two pointer to help seal victory for his side.

REFEREE WATCH

Adam Kinahan took charge of this game and didn’t have much to do in the middle, a few cards were dished out but it was generally a clean enough game and he didn’t have any major decisions to call that affected the scoreline.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

Eoin Carroll’s goal followed up by the two pointer were the key moments in this game and turned the game on its head and ultimately made the difference in the end.

VENUE WATCH

Cappincur hosted the game this evening and did so very well. Plenty of stewards were on hand and there was plenty of parking around the pitch. There was a shop as well for refreshments and overall the pitch was in good knick for a nice evening for football.
