Testers have advised that this can be avoided by conducting a "simple walk-around inspection" prior to bringing your car to the test centre.
They have also reminded people to enlist the help of a family member or friend to ensure that their cars brake lights are working properly prior to their test.
The NCT has further warned of the potential danger misaligned headlights present to other road users.
Misaligned headlights can potentially dazzle other drivers and lead to a road accident.
The NCT revealed that in 2024 140,602 tested vehicles failed the NCT due to their Headlamp Aim, when the headlights are not functioning properly or are misaligned.
They have advised of a series of further checks car owners can carry out before their test to avoid failing due to the car's headlights.
NCT tests have outlined a series of further checks car owners should carry out prior to their test:
If still unsure car owners should take their car to a trusted mechanic or dealership and have them check the headlights are properly functioning and aligned.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) advises car owners to have their headlights professionally checked every year.
This helps ensure good visibility and prevents dazzling other road users. Regular checks can also help avoid failures in the NCT, as misaligned headlights pose a significant road safety hazard.
