Offaly boxer qualifies for medal fight at World Championships

OFFALY boxer Grainne Walsh continued her bid for World Championship glory with another big win in Liverpool on Monday evening.

She put on a masterful display in her Last 16 bout against Spain’s Mariana Soto Torres, winning 5-0. Judges scored the bout 29: 28, 30:27, 29:28, 30:27, 30:27.

Tullamore woman Walsh will box for a medal against China’s Yang Liu - the Paris silver medalist at the weight. They will meet in Wednesday’s Evening Session.

Now competing with St Mary's Boxing Club in Tallaght, Olympian Walsh had a clearcut 5-0 win over Jessica Triebelova in the 65kg class with the judges scoring her: 30-27, 30-27, 30-29, 29-28 and 30-27 in her opening bout on Friday evening.

Daingeean man Brian Kennedy makes his championship debut on Tuesday, having been accorded a first-round bye in the 85k class. A member of St Brigid's Boxing Club in Edenderry, He steps between the ropes of Ring A at around 9.45pm against 27 year old Danylo Zhasan of Ukraine Kennedy is a tough competitor who will be fully focused on making progress.
