A MAN has been accused of offences involving a national monument in south Offaly last year.

Micheal Talbot (60), Annaghmore, Kinnitty, Birr, is alleged to have committed the offences on a date unknown between April 4 and April 8 next at Knockbarron, Kinnitty.

He is charged with excavating, digging out or otherwise disturbing ground in or in proximity to a recorded national monument (archaeological complex number OF036-028) without the consent of the National Monuments Service.

Mr Talbot is also charged with failing to give notice in writing to the National Monuments Service of intended works to be conducted at Knockbarron, Kinnitty, Birr at the recorded monument.

Mr Talbot appeared before Judge Andrew Cody where he was represented by Patrick Martin, solicitor. “It's an unusual prosecution,” said Mr Martin.

An adjournment was sought by Sergeant Brendan Kearns and Judge Cody remanded the accused on continuing bail to the District Court sitting on November 12 next.
