How to dress and what to bring to the National Ploughing Championships
Heading to the National Ploughing Championships in Screggan, Tullamore?
This is a fantastic event with loads to see and do. But it's September and it's Ireland and the weather forecast is not great, so be prepared for all types of weather.
What should you bring?
1. A Waterproof Jacket: is a good idea and maybe something warm underneath especially if you plan on going early. A hat or cap can be useful for both sun and rain.
Sturdy and Waterproof Footwear: This is probably the most important item. The event takes place on large, often muddy fields and while there will be walking tracks they can get pretty mucky too. Wellies are a classic choice and a great way to keep your feet dry. If wellies aren't your style, a pair of waterproof hiking boots or other sturdy comfortable footwear that you don't mind getting dirty will also work.
A Backpack or Cross-body bag: You'll be walking a lot and likely picking up leaflets, samples, or maybe even a purchase or two. A bag will help you keep your hands free and your belongings organised.
Cash and Card: While many traders will be set up for card payments, some will not, so it's a good idea to bring cash for smaller purchases such as food stalls, or if a particular stall's card machine is having issues.
A portable phone charger or power bank. This is also a handy item to have. You may be using your phone to take pics, or video certain events. You may even need it to track down friends who have become lost in the crowd. Having a portable charger will come in handy in this case.
A reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated is important and bringing your own bottle is a great way to save money and reduce waste.
Sunscreen and Sunglasses: Even on a cloudy day, the sun can be strong. Protect your skin and eyes, just in case the sun decides to make an appearanceHand Sanitiser and Tissues: With thousands of people and lots of food and animal exhibits, it's always smart to have those on hand for hygiene.
Your Ticket either printed or on your phone: To avoid delays, it's highly recommended to have your ticket ready to be scanned at the gate. You don't want to travel a long distance only to find you forgot your ticket.
A sense of Adventure: The event is more than just ploughing: It's a massive exhibition with everything from food stalls and fashion shows to live entertainment and machinery displays. Be prepared to wander, explore and have a great time.
