Tullamore has taken a major step towards a greener future with the unveiling of signage marking the official Tullamore Decarbonising Zone (DZ).
The initiative, led by Offaly County Council, is part of Ireland’s national commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build more sustainable communities.
The Decarbonising Zone concept is focused on reducing carbon emissions at a local level, while also supporting renewable energy, sustainable transport, and energy efficiency.
By designating Tullamore as a DZ, the town is positioning itself as a model for climate action in the Midlands.
Speaking at the launch Cathaoirleach for Tullamore, Cllr Declan Harvey, highlighted the importance of the project: ''This is about shaping a healthier, more sustainable town for our residents and future generations. The Decarbonising Zone will bring together community groups, businesses, and local government to reduce emissions and promote innovation.''
TD Tony McCormack added that the initiative represents more than just environmental action:
''The Decarbonising Zone will also bring economic and social benefits. By investing in green infrastructure and energy efficiency, Tullamore can attract new opportunities and improve quality of life for everyone.”
The Tullamore DZ will focus on practical measures such as:
Expanding cycling and walking infrastructure.
Promoting and investigating renewable energy solutions.
Supporting community groups with the Community Climate Action Fund and
encouraging community engagement in climate-friendly projects.
Reducing energy poverty in Tullamore beyond.
