Successful minor management promoted to take charge of Offaly U20 footballers

Important vacancy to be filled for minor footballers

Successful minor management promoted to take charge of Offaly U20 footballers

Roger Ryan and Nigel Dunne will be working together again with Offaly U20 footballers

AS expected Roger Ryan is about to be appointed as the manager of the Offaly U20 footballers for 2026.

The Shannonbridge man guided Offaly to a sensational win in the Leinster Minor Football Championship in 2025 and had been tipped to go up to the U20 footballers after the County Board made the decision to replace the outgoing manager Mark Plunkett some weeks ago.

The Tullamore man had served one year at the helm and it was a one horse race when an Offaly GAA review committee decided that a new manager be appointed.

Ryan has served as minor football manager for the past few years and 2025 was the most successful as they gathered great momentum after a slow start and beat Louth in the Leinster final – they were very close to beating Mayo in the All-Ireland quarter-final.

It has been decided to keep the same management team together at U20 level. Shamrocks club man, Nigel Dunne will be the head coach and a selector and the other selectors/coaches are Darren Quinn (Clonbullogue) and Keith McGuinness (Edenderry) while Rosemount man Eoin Carberry is the goalkeeping coach.

It means that there is a vacancy for Offaly minor football manager and this is a hugely important appointment.

Nigel Dunne was the front runner for that and he would have got it but for a desire by the County Board selection committee to keep the same management together in their entirety at U20 level. Dunne, who has told Shamrocks he is retiring from senior club football, went in as a coach last year and was a big influence as they turned things around spectacularly.

A full time coaching officer with the County Board, he was willing to go with the County Board wishes and stay with Roger Ryan and the U20 footballers rather than taking over the minor footballers.

There is a very talented young group of players emerging around fifteen years of age. Some of them will be on the minor panel next year and the County Board will now have to work hard to get the right man in charge.

Former Tullamore manager Niall Stack and Ferbane boss Ger Rafferty are two contenders and it is big, crucial appointment.
