THE Shinrone Heritage Group recently hosted a wonderful Ecumenical Service at the historic Kilmurray Graveyard.

Despite the unsettled weather, nature seemed to play its part — the sun broke through, the wind eased, and the rain softened — as the wider community came together to remember loved ones and to appreciate the peace and beauty of this very special place.

Welcoming the large gathering, Ger Murphy reflected on the historical significance of the site, its deep connections with the people of Shinrone, and the recent conservation works undertaken with the support of Offaly County Council to help preserve the graveyard for future generations.

Alan Algeo, representing Rev. Wallace, Fr Tom Hogan, and Rev. Kingston, brought together the different faith traditions in a spirit of unity and remembrance, making the service both meaningful and deeply moving.

Councillor Peter Ormond concluded the event with heartfelt words of thanks to all who helped organise and support what many now hope will become an annual gathering of reflection and community.

The Shinrone Heritage Group extended special thanks to Sean O’Meara and Jim Dockery for providing the pop-up tents, Dick Donnelly for the audio equipment, Liam Coonan for preparing the field, and Jim Cosgrove for having the tractor and trailer at hand in case anyone got stuck.

Warm appreciation also went to organist Mary O’Meara and all who sang so beautifully during the service, creating a lovely atmosphere. Thanks were also expressed to Councillor Ormond and all who helped set up the site, and to Marie Maher and her team at the Shinrone Community Centre for the very welcome refreshments afterwards — a fitting end to a memorable community occasion.
