A 32 year old man was sentenced to three months imprisonment for theft during last week's Tullamore District Court sitting.

Ghassan Alyazjy, 17 Meadowlands, Kilcormac was charged with stealing groceries worth €44 and 15 cent from Euro Giant, Bridge Centre, Tullamore on September 17 last.

Sergeant Brendan Kearns told the court that Mr Alyazjy entered the store with two other men and then carried out the theft. The property wasn't recovered. The defendant had eight previous convictions including for assault and drug driving.

The defending solicitor Patrick Martin told the court that his client was the father of three children and had previously been employed as a delivery driver. He was originally a Syrian national. “He has brought €60 with him to court today and he apologises for what he did."

Judge Andrew Cody commented that he couldn't overlook the fact that Mr Alyazjy had committed a number of serious offences earlier in 2025. He therefore convicted and sentenced as stated.
