HUNDREDS of tractors, classic cars and other vehicles thronged Market Square and the centre of Tullamore on Sunday last for the much anticipated annual Christmas Tractor Run.

The long established event yet again was a charity fundraiser for Dóchas, the Offaly cancer support group, and participiants and onlookers travelled from near and far for the event.

It was fitting that the much-loved event, which has raised hundreds of thousands of euro for charity since its inception, was officially opened by veteran business man, Billy Shaw, of WR Shaw.

Speaking at the formalities on Sunday morning, Public Relations Officer of the Tractor Run organising committee, local business man, PJ Lynam said it never failed to shock him the size of the turnout,

He noted that the 18th run had attracted participants from all over the midlands, some from as far as Mullingar, Athlone, Birr, Roscrea, Portlaoise and Kildare.

"We are honoured to have a very special guest, veteran businessman, Billy Shaw and his family to officially cut the ribbon for this year's run," added Mr Lynam.

The organising committee PRO said the tractor run has raised over €450,000 for cancer care since its inception.

"This would not be possible without the hard work and dedication from the committee led by chairman Mick Waters, and also their families and friends - these are the unsung heroes that make it happen," stressed Mr Lynam.

He thanked the sponsors, Garda, Offaly County Council, local businesses, the media and those who sponsored items for the famous auction to be held later that night in The Old Harbour Bar.

He also thanked John Leavy of Leavy's Centra in Tullamore for sponsoring the breakfast rolls enjoyed by many prior to the start of the event.

Anne Scally, Chairperson of Dóchas, thanked the organisers of the event, the participants and all those who helped in any way.

She spoke of the huge importance of fund-raising for Dóchas which enables them to continue to provide their all-important service.

The convoy started to leave Market Square at midday and the crowds along the streets and country roads were entertained by the spectacle of tractors trucks, cars and motorbikes.
