Annual GOAL Mile held in Offaly for 20th year in succession

THE town of Birr marked a historic milestone on Christmas Day as hundreds of locals gathered for the 20th annual GOAL Mile.

On a glorious, sun-drenched afternoon, the community turned out in large numbers to support GOAL’s global humanitarian efforts, transforming the Birr Mile into a sea of festive spirit and goodwill.

Celebrating two decades, participants included competitive runners, annual festive walkers and families with strollers and pets, completing the mile under pristine blue skies, proving that the Christmas Day tradition is stronger than ever in the heart of Offaly.

"To see such a massive turnout for our 20th anniversary is truly humbling," said Birr co-ordinator, Emma Nee Haslam. "The weather was on our side today, but it’s the generosity and consistency of the Birr community over the last twenty years that really makes the difference for those in need."

The atmosphere was buoyed by the fine bright weather, with participants staying long after their mile to exchange Christmas greetings and celebrate the dual milestone of the event's longevity and its continued success. While the event is not a formal race there's plenty of friendly rivalry among families and friends to be first over the line, adding to the fun on day.

While final figures are still being tallied, the donations collected will go directly toward GOAL’s life-saving work in vulnerable communities across the globe, providing emergency response, healthcare and nutrition.

For over 40 years, the GOAL Mile has been a cornerstone of the Irish Christmas across the country, inviting people to run, jog or walk a mile to raise funds for the world’s poorest communities.
