UPDATE: Return of An Post services to popular Offaly shop 'not definitively ruled out'

The latest update comes after Carol Nolan TD engaged with An Post concerning the ongoing matter

UPDATE: Return of An Post services to popular Offaly shop 'not definitively ruled out'

Deputy Nolan has said she "will continue to engage constructively with An Post on this important issue"

Independent TD for Offaly Carol Nolan has issued an update from An Post officials after they abruptly ceased their services at Tom Doolan's Spar shop in Blueball on Monday, December 29.

The move left many residents, particularly elderly and vulnerable people forced to travel into Tullamore to collect their payments. In some cases, individuals have been unable to access their money at all, causing significant distress and inconvenience.

The issue was caused after An Post agency services were terminated following an Eir fibre broadband upgrade that was found to be incompatible with the An Post IT network.

Deputy Nolan has now revealed via a press release that she was informed by An Post officials that: "due to security reasons that were totally unforeseen, it was necessary to transfer the services to Tullamore. An Post have acknowledged to me that this was deeply inconvenient and far from ideal."

The Independent TD went on to say: "Having spoken directly with An Post, it does seem to have been caught off guard by the impact of the Eir upgrade on its systems. It has assured me however that while services are still available for Blueball customers in Kilcormac and Tullamore."

Doolan's shop returning to their status as an An Post agency may still materialise moving forward as she continued: "A definitive end to the service at Doolan’s is not being ruled out and will depend on the level of investment that may be needed to align An Post’s IT system with the Eir fibre broadband upgrade and the necessity of maintaining security on the network.”

The press release also disclosed the measures in place for those affected by the cessation of postal services who will now have to travel to Kilcormac or Tullamore for their payments whilst the issue is ongoing. The TD adds: "I understand that a dedicated counter reserved for Blueball customers is being made available to try and mitigate the level of disruption that has been caused."

Carol Nolan TD weighed in on the ongoing situation at the popular shop on the outskirts of Tullamore. She commented: "I certainly want to see the return of services to Doolan’s and I hope this can be achieved sooner rather than later. I have been assured by An Post that it is actively exploring pathways to establish if this can be achieved while guaranteeing the security of its own system and crucially, that of its customers."
Deputy Nolan concluded by assuring that she "will continue to engage constructively with An Post on this important issue and I will keep the community updated as soon as I have further information on any developments that occur."

Carol Nolan TD's update marks progress on resolving the matter as local representatives continue to urge An Post and the Department of Communications to prioritise the restoration of the Blueball service. This will ensure that communities are never again left without essential services due to technical changes implemented without adequate planning or communication.
