Household rubbish dumped from Whitehall bridge onto the canal bank

TULLAMORE Tidy Towns has launched a social media campaign to "shame" litter louts and rogue dog walkers who don't clean up after their pets.

The initiative was launched on Sunday last following a major clean-up on the Grand Canal – from Whitehall to Cappincur bridges – prior to Monday's walk in memory of the late Ashling Murphy.

Tidy Towns PRO, Loughnan Hooper, speaking to the Tribune, said: "From here onwards the Tidy Towns will be using our Facebook page to name and shame repeat offenders with photos and videos, this will include serial rubbish bag dumpers.

The PRO said the initiative will also highlight those "who are stuffing their household rubbish in the town centre bins and a major drive will take place on dog fouling around town and walkways with offenders being highlighted."

Speaking on Sunday morning, Mr Hooper highlighted a serious issue at Bury (Whitehall) bridge where household rubbish is being regularly dumped onto the adjacent canal bank.

"We need help to identify the serial dumper who thinks it is acceptable to throw their rubbish at the Bury Bridge / Tullamore Harbour. This is a repeat offender deliberately spreading their household bin bags over the bridge. If you have any information please supply it to the Litter Warden at the Tullamore Municipal District office - tullamoremd@offalycoco.ie"
