A disastrous double bogey on the final hole of the Dubai Invitational on the DP World Tour cost Shane Lowry a golden opportunity to win the tournament.

Standing on the 18th tee, the Offaly man had a one shot lead on ten under par for the tournament and he was four under for his round.

After hitting a perfect tee shot, he was in prime position but with 139 yards to go, he overshot the green and ended in a bunker.

Things went from bad to worse for Shane as his third shot went right across the green and ended in the water. After taking a drop, he came close to chipping in but he had to settle for a double bogey which dropped him into a tie for third at the Dubai Creek Resort.

He was in contention all week with rounds of three, four and two under par and he climbed to the top of the leaderboard after 71 holes before finishing with a double bogey.

The tournament was won by Nacho Elvira and ten under with Daniel Hillier in second.

Rory McIlroy finished in a tie for third alongside Shane Lowry, David Puig and Julien Guerrier.
