Twelve special classes confirmed for Offaly schools including two new approvals

The latest schools to receive approval are Scoil Bhríde in Croghan and Clonlisk National School

Two further special classes for Offaly have been confirmed for the 2026/2027 school year, bringing the total number announced for the county to twelve.

The latest schools to receive approval are Scoil Bhríde in Croghan and Clonlisk National School.

They will join ten other Offaly schools in having a new special class in place for the upcoming academic year. These include Mercy Primary School and St Brendan’s Boys Primary School in Birr, Durrow National School, Tullamore College and Rhode National School.

The remaining schools across the Faithful County to receive new classes are Cappagh National School, Tullamore Educate Together National School, Banagher College, Scoil Mhuire and Coláiste Choilm in Tullamore.

Fine Gael TD for Offaly, John Clendennen has welcomed the latest update. He said: "I am pleased to see a further two additional special classes confirmed for Scoil Bhríde in Croghan and Clonlisk National School.

This brings the total number of new special classes for Offaly to twelve for the 2026/2027 school year, a significant expansion of supports for children and families across our county."

He added: "These classes will provide vital educational opportunities for students with additional needs, ensuring they can access high-quality education within their own communities."

Deputy Clendennen also acknowledged the work of school staff, boards of management, parents and the Department of Education in securing these important resources.

He stated: "This is about ensuring every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. The expansion of special class provision across Offaly reflects the growing need and the commitment to meeting that need locally."

The Offaly TD reaffirmed his commitment to continuing to work with schools and families across Offaly to ensure adequate educational supports are in place.

Clendennen concluded: "Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive in their local school. Expanding special education provision remains a key priority, and I will continue to push for further supports where needed. This announcement reflects a strong commitment to strengthening education across Offaly."
