Founding committee members Billy Gleeson, Mick Mahon, Liam White and Johnny Butterfield
A LARGE crowd filled the tables in Killoughey Community Centre on the 29th of March, 50 years after the new Community Centre opened.
The centre, named the Parish of Killoughey Community Centre in Mountbolus, metamorphed into Mountbolus Community Centre and finally into Killoughey Community Centre as it is known today.
Father Meade opened the ceremonies with a blessing of the Community Centre. Michael Mahon, Blacklion, spoke.
He recalled how Butler’s, suppliers of materials to build the Community Centre, sent a bill for materials to the committee. There was no money. Hughie Mullens, local shopkeeper and committee treasurer along with Michael Healion, put up his own money as a loan to the committee.
This started another fund-raising drive for the community. The “Yank” Feighery was the first to step up with a donation of £50.

Ronnie Bryant, committee secretary, and Johnnie Butterfield, local county councillor followed suit. Members of Killoughey Parish, and some from further afield, contributed until the loan was repaid to Hughie, and the remainder was invested further into the building. Mick also spoke about the involvement of Ronnie Bryant, the committee secretary.
Even though some members of the C of I community disapproved of his involvement with the committee, especially attendance at dances on a Sunday, Ronnie stood with the committee.
Tommy Phelan, current chair of the hall committee spoke next. recalling other events that happened nationally in 1976. The cutting of the birthday cake followed the speeches. Mick Mahon was joined by Des Murphy, son of Paddy Murphy, the first committee assistant secretary, to cut the cake.
