The presentation will be led by by Ricky Whelan, Biodiversity Officer at Offaly County Council
Offaly Climate and Biodiversity Action Group are holding their first gardening-themed presentation. 'Ungardening for Biodiversity' by Ricky Whelan, Biodiversity Officer in Offaly County Council will take place at 6pm on Thursday, April 9 in Tullamore Library.
As spring is taking hold it’s the perfect time to start planning the gardening year ahead. The talk will explore how simple changes in everyday gardening practices can make a big difference for local wildlife.
Throughout the presentation, Ricky will look at practical ways to help create habitats for birds, bees and bats by choosing wildlife‑friendly plants, reducing chemical use, and providing food and shelter throughout the year.
Whether it's a large garden, a small outdoor space or a balcony, this session will show how those in attendance can help support biodiversity right on your doorstep.

The voluntary group's Chairperson Gaelan Elliffe said: "We are very pleased to have Ricky present on this topic. I'm looking forward to his presentation as he has a great depth of knowledge on the topic."
She added: "Later in the year, our group plan to have more gardening-themed presentations and in May we plan to hold events for bike week and biodiversity week. We encourage people to come along and connect with others interested in learning about nature and promoting sustainability.
Gaelan concluded: "Our group is building a community of people passionate about nature with both sharing information and
volunteering important to our group.”
A recent climate café on March 28 in Tullamore Library sparked some interesting conversations with participants discussing cycling in Offaly.
Attendees also shared information from a recent composting workshop with the possibility of community composting being
discussed. The lifespan of products and repairing items was also discussed during the gathering.
The 'Ungardening for Biodiversity' event will be held upstairs in Tullamore Library at 6PM, and bookings can be made for free on eventbrite.
