Bourke set for debut in second tier competition

OFFALY man Cillian Bourke will get his first big chance to impress when he competes for his club, Essendon next weekend.

The Tullamore man has been named to play for Essendon in the Victorian Football League for Essendon against Williamstown in Windy Hill, Melbourne this Saturday – the Victorian Football League is a second tier, regional, semi-professional competition, operated by the Australian Football League.

Bourke's departure late last year was a devastating blow to Offaly football. A powerful, strong running midfielder, he was one of the county's most promising prospects and he ended months of speculation by signing a contract with Essendon.

He has had some injury problems since moving to Australia but has worked hard and his debut this weekend will give his club a chance to see where he is in a competitive game as they blood players for the Australian Football League.

Seen as a utility option for Essendon, Bourke first travelled to Australia to participate in the 2024 AFL Draft Combine, having attended training in Dublin throughout the year ahead of trials for Australian clubs.

He played senior football for Offaly and Tullamore last season, starring for Tullamore as they won the Senior Football Championship.

The Australian Football League runs from March to September and Essendon are currently placed 17 out of 18 teams with six defeats and one win from their opening seven games. In the Victorian Football League, Essendon are 18th out of 22 teams with eight points from five games.

With the season ending in September, there is a possibility that Bourke will return home to play for Tullamore at the tail-end of the Offaly Senior Football Championship – other players in his position have done this in the past.
