Offaly man makes debut with Australian football club

Tullamore man gains invaluable experience in opening game
OFFALY man Cillian Bourke got his first big chance to impress when he competed for his club Essendon in the second tier Victorian Football League in Melbourne last Saturday.
The Tullamore man made his competitive debut in a 88-75 defeat by Williamstown in Windy Hill, Melbourne.
20 year old Bourke has been working hard since moving to play Australian football late last year, despite some early injury problems.
Essendon had a five goal lead heading into half time but were over powered in the second half when Williamstown outscored them by eight goals to two.
It was a big occasion for Bourke as it was his first competitive game and he will be hoping for more action in the coming weeks – they take on GWS Interstate at the Tom Wills Oval in Sydney next Sunday.
It has been a testing season for Essendon to date. Their Australian Football League side have struggled and are lying joint bottom in the table with just four points out of eight games. In the Victorian Football League, Essendon are 19th out of 22 teams with eight points out of six games.
It is all a learning curve for Bourke, who misplaced some foot passes but worked very hard - he impressed with his defensive play and also showcased his physicality with his speed and fielding ability catching the eye. At this stage for a novice player learning a new game, it is all about experience for Bourke and making incremental progress.
The Victorian Football League is a second tier, regional, semi-rofessional competition, operated by the Australian Football League.
Bourke's departure late last year was a devastating blow to Offaly football. A powerful, strong running midfielder, he was one of the county's most promising prospects and he ended months of speculation by signing a contract with Essendon.
Experience at this level will be crucial for Bourke as he bids to make a professional career in Australia.
Seen as a utility option for Essendon, Bourke first travelled to Australia to participate in the 2024 AFL Draft Combine, having attended training in Dublin throughout the year ahead of trials for Australian clubs.
He played senior football for Offaly and Tullamore last season, starring for Tullamore as they won the Senior Football Championship.
The Australian Football League runs from March to September and there is a possibility that Bourke will return home to play for Tullamore at the tail-end of the Offaly Senior Football Championship – other players in his position have done this in the past.
